Proliferation of roadside caffeine stops draws sharp contrast with Starbucks’ ‘connect and gather’ strategy
Hundreds of coffee shops the size of shipping containers are springing up along US roadways to serve Americans who want a caffeine fix without getting out of their cars. Drive-through chains such as Dutch Bros, 7 Brew, Biggby Coffee, Scooter’s Coffee and Black Rock Coffee Bar are shaking up the US food and beverage sector with an obsessive focus on speedy service.
Many lack seats, with kitchen areas as small as 350 square feet. “People don’t want to go inside and sit around anymore. They are interested in getting in and out,” said Shaina Allen, a franchisee at Scooter’s, which has tripled its store count to nearly 900 in the past five years.
